Abstract

ABSTRACT This thesis, an attempt to look for plausible answers to the question Does wandering among various fields of knowledge consolidate a differentiated relation in the constitution of a foreign language teacher/educator? obliged me to visit/re-visit many different fields of knowledge. This action encouraged me to propose a new approach strongly supported by an interdisciplary investigation as regards the role of Art in the development of English teaching courses, using the metaphor for the act of looking. Knowing that one of the principles of interdisciplinarity is the non desmissal of any knowledge field but rather the gathering of all of them, the first and second investigating looks focussed on the teaching and learning relashionships in the teaching of English. Aware of the data collected from both looks, the third one focussed on my own action supported by the approaches Story Telling and Narratives and Arts Based Approach with stu-dents of a extension course of English offered by a brazilian university where the teacher/researcher puts his Repertoire into action and collects the necessary ingredients to confront them subsequently with his experience, for the teaching and learning relationship of a foreign language not only pressuposes a research geared towards Applied Linguistics, an interdisciplinary field, but also research that emphasizes story telling/experience/repertoire of the teacher and the student in an everlasting movement. The partial conclusions within this third look were the foundation of my belief in the im-portant role of Art in the consolidation of a differentiated relation in my own formation: the one of an English teacher and the rescuing of humanism. In the fourth investigating look, where I discovered within me the waking up of a reflex-ive teacher/artist by means of four elements: 1 - the meaning of literature, 2 - the meaning of theatre, 3 - the meaning of opera and 4 - the significance of my meeting Maria Callas - the descovery of the inner metaphor - my teachers-to-be and I arrived at some possible answers on the research question above. The relevance of this work is to have offered me the possibility of delving inside me, al-lowing me to expose the work to my students, my teachers-to-be and those interested in walking along the path of Interdisciplinarity.
